Father & Son relationships deepened

A 5-day camp for boys and their father or male mentor to strengthen their bond as he grows into a young adult.

An evidence-based program supporting boys to become great men. Boys need support and guidance to make a healthy transition into becoming great young men. Parents also need to shift and redefine the relationship once he is no longer a boy. We give you the tools and experience to do just that.

What you can expect from the Making Of Men Program

Strengthen the bond

Five days of real time together, with the kind of conversations you don’t usually get to have. Stories shared. Things said out loud. Something built that lasts.

Guide the transition
Boys don’t become healthy young men by accident. This is a marked moment, held by experienced men, where your son steps out of boyhood and into the next stage of who he’s becoming.
A community of good men
Your son is surrounded by men who know how to hold him, challenge him, and treat him with respect. An experienced and dedicated team of facilitators, fathers, uncles, and elders, all guiding and supporting him on his journey of becoming.
The challenge that builds him
Boys grow when something real is asked of them. This camp puts your son in front of intentional, age-appropriate challenges to inspire and show him what he’s capable of.
A vision for the road ahead
By the end of camp, your son will have done the work to name what kind of man he wants to be. He leaves with a sense of direction, and the language to share it with you.
Honoured. Seen. Welcomed.
The camp closes with a ceremony where every young man is honoured by his community, by the men around him, and by you. It is one of the most powerful moments families take home with them.

Support your boy to become a healthy young man.

Your son will gain the necessary skills and values to develop into a respectful, responsible and happy young man who knows his role within your family, social circles, and the wider community.
See the impact that just 5 days out in nature can have on your relationship with your son, which is one of his most important in this stage of his development.

Meet The
Head of Camps

Karim Kaufman, Head of Camps, has been part of the ROPI community for over 25 years, starting when he attended a camp himself as a young man. Now a youth worker, mentor, and educator, he has spent his career paying that forward, leading young people through the same experiences that shaped him.
Karim works at the intersection of men’s psychology, wilderness therapy, and rites of passage, and has personally guided thousands of young people and their families through ROPI’s camp programs. As a father of two, the connections he watches form on camp mean more to him than ever.

Frequently asked questions.

Everything you need to know before you book. If your question isn’t here, reach out directly.
Making of Men is for boys aged 14 to 17, attending with their father or another significant man in their life.
Yes. While most boys come with their dad, plenty attend with an uncle, grandfather, stepfather or another significant man in their life, and it works beautifully. If you’d like to talk through who might be right for your son, just get in touch.

The program is a mixture of games and activities as well as a more serious side where we share stories as a way of passing on wisdom and knowledge, spend time relaxing around a fire, and take part in facilitated discussion.

We create healthy, safe challenges to help your son explore who he wants to be in the next stage of his life and what behaviours he needs to let go of. We also create personal visions for the future and spend time recognising and acknowledging the gifts, talents and genius in each of us.

All of our camps and programs are completely non-denominational and are not associated with any religion. We welcome everyone to our programs.

Mothers play such a vital role in the Rite of Passage process, even though you are not physically at the camp. Mothers are invited to a Zoom call with our women’s team, and to attend the leaving and return ceremonies on the first and last day of camp.

The Leaving Ceremony is purely for mothers and accompanying women. The Returning Ceremony is a celebration to welcome back your young man, and is open to all family and friends.

Our camps are held at our beautiful purpose built facility in the Byron Bay hinterland, on the North East coast of NSW.

The closest airports are the Gold Coast and Ballina, both around an hour’s drive from the site. We usually find the Gold Coast offers cheaper fares as it’s larger and has more flights, and we offer a complimentary shuttle bus from the Gold Coast.

The shuttle departs Gold Coast Airport at 9.30am on the first day of camp, from the shuttle bus pickup zone at the northern end of the terminal. On the final day it departs Durrumbul Hall at 4pm and returns to Gold Coast Airport. Please book flights that allow enough time either side.

We begin at Durrumbul Hall, Main Arm NSW. Please arrive by 10.45am for an 11am start, and we conclude by 4pm at Durrumbul on the final day.
This is a week of camping in tents. You cannot sleep in or access your vehicle during camp. If you don’t have your own gear you can hire a camp kit from us, just let us know when you book.

We create a sense of separation from your regular way of being. No phones, no routines, no watches and no computers. It helps everyone be really present, think about things differently, and have real conversations that don’t normally happen.

Mobile phones, cameras, watches, computers and electronic devices are collected on arrival and stored safely for the duration of camp.

We’re off grid, with composting toilets, solar power and limited showering facilities. Many people find biodegradable moist towelettes handy for freshening up. There’s also a watering hole on the property you may be able to swim in, weather permitting.
Yes, the week is fully catered and we accommodate dietary requirements. Please don’t bring additional food or snacks unless pre-arranged for specific dietary needs.

Day pack, water bottle, hat, torch, sunscreen and insect repellent, sturdy walking shoes, clothing for the outdoors, a rain jacket (essential), toiletries, towel and face washer.

Please don’t bring sports equipment, reading or writing material, or non-prescription drugs or alcohol.

Byron hinterland weather can differ from the Byron Bay forecast, and the mountains are known for making their own weather, so please pack for all conditions.

As a rough guide across our camp months, April days are typically 24 to 26°C dropping to around 15°C overnight. July days are around 19 to 21°C dropping to 8 to 10°C, so nights are genuinely cold. September and October days are around 22 to 25°C dropping to 12 to 15°C.

We send a specific forecast out closer to camp so you can pack accordingly.

Our camps are tech free and there is no reception on the property, but our staff can get a message to participants in an emergency, and we will supply an emergency contact number prior to camp.
Yes, we offer a 6 month payment plan you can apply automatically at checkout.

You can read our full terms and conditions here: https://ritesofpassageinstitute.org/terms-conditions/

We strongly encourage domestic travel insurance to cover you if you need to cancel or postpone for reasons outside your control. Policies can be as affordable as $40 to $100 and typically cover airfares, accommodation and program costs. One option worth exploring is Insure and Go, whose Silver Level cover includes up to $10,000 with a $100 excess: https://www.insureandgo.com.au
